Cancer research in Owensboro gets $4.5 million
The University of Louisville has received a $3.15 million grant from the Helmsley Charitable Trust
to support the U of L James Graham Brown Cancer Center and cancer research taking place in Owensboro.
The grant will be matched with state "Bucks for Brains" funding to bring more than $4.5 million to the
Owensboro Cancer Research Program.

KBP to accelerate vaccine-grade protein production
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has announced that KBP is being awarded an
agreement for developing a proof-of-concept platform capable of delivering vaccine grade recombinant
protein, an essential component of future vaccines.

Tobacco plants yield vaccine for cruise ship virus
Scientists have used a new vaccine production technology to develop a vaccine for norovirus, a dreaded
cause of diarrhea and vomiting that may be the second most common viral infection in the United States
after the flu. Sometimes called the "cruise ship virus," this microbe can spread like wildfire through passenger
liners, schools, offices and military bases.

Preventative drug for HIV manufactured in plants ready to begin clinical development
A University of Louisville faculty member at the Owensboro Cancer Research Program (OCRP) will publish research
supporting the use of transgenic plants in HIV prevention. The study indicates that growing large quantities of
the protein griffithsin in Nicotiana benthamiana – a close relative of tobacco – offers an affordable, preventative
measure for HIV.

Bayer broadens its manufacturing basis for biopharmaceuticals in tobacco plants
Bayer Innovation GmbH and Kentucky Bioprocessing are collaborating to develop a facility at KBP’s Owensboro plant
for the production service of biopharmaceuticals. Based on Bayer’s proprietary magnICON® technology, plant made
pharmaceutical proteins and other high-value products will be produced in tobacco plants on commercial scale.

KBP Awarded Patent for Development of Parvovirus Vaccine
The United States Patent and Trademark Office has awarded a patent to Owensboro based Kentucky BioProcessing, LLC,
enabling production of a parvovirus vaccine with potential for both feline and canine applications. Parvovirus is a
sometimes fatal infectious disease affecting many small animals including domesticated dogs and cats.

KBP’s Geneware product to be used in HPV vaccine development
The University of Louisville’s James Graham Brown Cancer Center has licensed technology for a second-generation
vaccine against the human papillomavirus (HPV) to Advanced Cancer Therapeutics (ACT), a Louisville-based private
company. In order to bring the vaccine to market quickly, ACT has also licensed rights to GENEWARE®, a technology
owned by Owensboro-based Kentucky BioProcessing, LLC (KBP).
